Are you missing the LA or SF food scene? Locale now delivers 'best of the city' restaurant boxes

Maybe you’re a transplant to the Bay Area and you’re missing your L.A. faves like Pizzana’s famous Neapolitan-style pies and the freshly baked rye bread from Langer’s Deli.

Or perhaps you’ve moved from the bay to SoCal and you’re craving Delfina’s pizza and that wildly popular egg-stuffed muffin from Craftsman and Wolves.

Locale, a curated gourmet delivery service based in Los Gatos, this week is launching “Taste of LA” and “Taste of SF / Bay Area” city boxes. They cost $65 each, plus the company’s standard $5 delivery fee (or this week, free delivery with CITYBOX code).

“We want to mimic a food tour of the city,” Locale co-founder Jonathan Friedland said about their inspiration for the boxes. “We want it to be a great gift and a ‘treat yourself’ box.”

The goodies from around Los Angeles includes one Cacio e Pepe Pizza (frozen) from Pizzana, which restaurant critic Jonathan Gold rated as among the best in the world; four Birria Burritos from Burritos La Palma (frozen); one ready-to-cook, house-made Spaghetti with a separate container of Bolognese Pasta Sauce from Pasta Sisters (frozen; serves 2); 10 Burrito Tortillas from Mejorado (fresh); and one fresh, sliced Rye Loaf from Langer’s Deli.

The Bay Area box features one Pizza alla Norma eggplant-mozzarella-and-more pie from Pizzeria Delfina of S.F., Burlingame and Palo Alto (frozen); one package of six Everything Bagels from Berkeley’s Boichik Bagels (frozen) with one container of Pink Label Cream Cheese from Boichik (fresh); one loaf of Lemon Bread from Jane the Bakery (fresh); and one of the eggy Rebel Within savory muffins from Craftsman and Wolves.

Deliveries are made weekly via refrigerated vans between the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego. (Residents of San Diego can order either box.) SoCal residents must order by 6 p.m. Thursday for Friday delivery. Bay Area customers need to get their orders in by midnight Thursday; delivery will be on Saturday, with an option to select a three-hour delivery window.

Foodies in the Bay Area may order either box or both.

Look for the offerings to rotate as Locale adds new partners, all curated. The decisions are made by seeking out high-quality food purveyors who have a “really, really loyal fan base,” Friedland said. Beyond that, he said, “We want to minimize choice overload, so not having five margherita pizzas but one.”

Locale was founded by Friedland and Chris Clark, friends who grew up in Los Gatos, during the pandemic year of 2020 as a South Bay delivery service, then began branching out geographically and in product offerings. The company, still headquartered in Los Gatos, currently works with more than 150 vendors.
